Conducting a lighting audit consists of inventorying the existing lighting fixtures in each functional area of an interior or exterior space, measuring light delivered to all significant areas and surfaces and comparing those measurements against known illumination standards. Measurements include both the quantity and quality of light delivered to each critical area - such as a work area - or surface. The overall goal of the lighting audit is to gather all data necessary for maximizing lighting efficiency and effectiveness and to find ways to cut energy costs in your small business. Basic Lighting-Audit ToolsThe tools most commonly used to conduct a lighting audit include a detailed floor plan, if interior lighting is to be audited, or a landscape plan, if exterior lighting is the subject of the audit; a tape measure; an electrical-power meter; a light meter capable of measuring lumens or candlepower and color temperature; a color chart; and audit worksheets.
Lumen is an international unit scale for measurement of visible light as perceived by the human eye, often expressed as lumen per square meter, which is in turn represented by the term 'lux.' Candlepower is an older measurement of the inherent intensity of light, with each unit roughly equivalent to the light intensity of a single candle. Measuring PerformanceUsing a tape measure, determine the distance of each lighting fixture from the areas and surfaces it was installed to illuminate, and record those distances in the worksheet section for each fixture. Using the light meter, measure the actual illumination level and color temperature at each of the various areas and surfaces, such as desktops and walkways.
Verify the color temperature against the printed color chart. Using the power meter, measure the electrical power consumption of each fixture. Record these performance measurements in the worksheet section dedicated to the light fixture. For example, an illumination level of 30 lux may be appropriate for a paved walkway in a darkened park setting, while the work surface upon which a person assembles very small, low-contrast components may require 1,000 lux. Standards established for the specific communities in question are available from local planning commissions, while current guidelines of the Illuminating Engineering Society are available in book form.
